Pet Wellness Care MattersWhat does wellness mean to you? Do you associate it with annual physical exams? How about things like exercise, eating well, and supporting emotional health? Wellness means many things to many people, but when it comes to pet wellness, what exactly does it mean for our pets?

Eagle Spirit Mobile Veterinary Practice is here to help define some of the important aspects of pet wellness and how you can better support your furry friend.

Creating a Baseline of Health

One of the reasons it’s so important to bring your pet in for an exam as soon as possible is to establish a baseline of health. A baseline of health is basically your pet’s normal health during each stage of life.

This helps us identify any changes in your pet’s health over time and can make an incredible difference in detecting changes early on. By recognizing even subtle or minute changes in your pet’s health, we’re better equipped to treat problems before they become life threatening.

Why Preventive Care Matters

There are many diseases that can be prevented with early diagnosis and treatment. While it may seem like annual or biannual exams are unnecessary (after all, your pet seems perfectly healthy!), we use these as an opportunity to perform diagnostic tests, like blood work and urinalysis.

Using your pet’s baseline results, we get a clearer picture of any unknown changes that are occurring (sometimes pets never exhibit any symptoms) and, in some cases, can actually cure problems early on.

Components of a Pet Wellness Exam

  • Nose-to-tail examination
  • Palpation of internal organs
  • Vaccinations and parasite control
  • Dental exam
  • Assess eyes, coat, and ears
  • Weight and nutrition recommendations
  • Lab and diagnostic testing as needed, including screening for parasites like heartworm
  • Behavioral consultation
  • Address any questions or concerns you might have

At-Home Pet Wellness Tips

Along with maintaining your pet’s routine exam, there are other simple ways you can encourage a good quality of life for your pet:

  • Adhere to the right diet for your pet, and avoid giving too many treats.
  • Provide opportunities for daily exercise and play.
  • Keep up with grooming needs.
  • Practice dental care at home with daily (or frequent) tooth brushing.
  • Socialize your pet through reward-based training and social opportunities.
  • Maintain exams, vaccines, and parasite control.
  • Remain aware of your pet’s health needs.
